Rumeli Fortress Information and History
Rumeli Hisari is the proof that Fatih Sultan Mehmet took his conquest of Istanbul seriously. The fortress, which has been guarding the Bosphorus for a hundred years, has become a place where local people have been given shelter and cultural organizations.
The construction of the military structure, which Fatih ordered to be built in front of Anadolu Hisarı to ensure the security of the Bosphorus, began on 15 April 1452. There are different views on when the building was built on 30 acres of land close to the narrowest point of the Bosphorus.
The materials used in the construction of the fortress were brought from different parts of Anatolia such as Izmit and Karadeniz Eregli. The fragments were removed from the ruined Byzantine structures.
